Empowering Me Youth Programme – Meet Jack!

On the 4th of February 2021 AP Cymru will be launching their first virtual empowering me youth programme session. The Empowering Me Youth Programme will be youth lead and will offer autistic youth the opportunity to socialise and build connections with other young people, participate in fun and inclusive activities and gain life skills. The programme aims to be inclusive and adaptable to each young persons individual needs. Ultimately the project will be what the young people want to make it. I had the chance to virtually chat with the programmes project leader Jack and here is what he had to say:

‘Hi, my name is Jack and I am an Ambassador for the AP Cymru Youth Project. I plan to study law at university next year and my hobbies include reading history books and playing video games.

I would like to be an Ambassador for the youth project because I love helping people no matter what their issue is and I believe I can use my experiences growing up to help younger people with any complications they may be going through.

I hope the project creates an environment where people feel safe and confident, especially now more than ever we all need to be here for each other so I hope I can help contribute to this.

As a project manager I am looking forward to helping as many people as I can. I had amazing support from AP growing up, so to have the opportunity to give back is amazing and I hope to use this platform for good.

I believe that this project is vital for autistic young people as I know it’s easier to talk out your problems with someone who has been through those experiences. I also know this project will help young people build bonds that could hopefully last a life time.

I’m looking forward to working with everyone in the project and my door will always be open if anyone needs a chat.’

It was awesome to meet Jack and all of us at Team AP are extremely excited for the launch of this new project, which is a 20 week pilot scheme funded by the Community Foundation for Wales. We believe it is imperative to give our autistic youth a voice and to provide them with a project designed to meet their inclusive needs as there is a lack of services available for autistic adolescents at present. We hope to change that.
